Welkom
/Bienvenue!

Belgium is a country bordering the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and France. It was formed relatively recently for European country standards, only becoming a nation in 1830 after its French and Catholic population rebelled against the protestant Netherlands. Inside Belgium exist two main regions, them being Wallonia (south), Brussels Capital (central) and Flanders (north).

Flanders

Flanders (Vlaanderen) is the northern part of Belgium and primarily speaks Flemish Dutch. It borders the regions of Wallonia and Brussels-Capital. It is the most populous and richer part of Belgium. Antwerp, a major city of Flanders, was historically and still is a large trade hub for many Europeans.

Wallonia

Wallonia (Wallonie) is the southern part of Belgium and speaks their own dialect of French, Walloon French. Wallonia also has a minority German-speaking population to the east. It was historically a big producer of coal and steel but by the 1950s-60s many of its mines became too old to maintain, offering little to-no profit to keep it going.

Brussels Capital

The Brussels-Capital Region is one the free regions of Belgium and is the capital of Belgium. Officially, both French and Dutch are recognized langauges thought French is more commonly spoken here. Brussels is also the capital of the EU (and NATO) housing most EU buildings like the European Parliament and the European Commision.

German Community

The German Community is one of the three federal communites of Belgium along with Flemish and Walloon (NOT regions, it is a part of Wallonia) It is a part of the region of Wallonia because it's too small to be considered its own region (see map) and was until 1919 a part of the German Empire where Belgium was given the territory as part of the Treaty of Versailes.

Belgium is a part of the BEnelux (a political and economic union) along with The Netherlands and Luxembourg.
