Hello!

Christianity is an Abrahamic religion which believes that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Messiah, as told by the Old Testament which spoke that God would send a Messiah to Earth. In Christianity, God is seen as an all-knowing, omnipresent and all-powerful being.

Salvation

By nature, Christianity considers humans sinful and seperated from God. Salvation, which is being saved from one's sins, can be achieved through belief in Jesus Christ. Though, this differs from denomination while some might see salvation as something that has to be earned, through for example good work others believe faith is enough.

Denominations

There are tens of thousands of Christian denominations (most of which are small and more regional) but generally there the following three are the most known..

Catholicism

Catholicism is the most widespread denomination of Christianity and is led by the Catholic Church and they believe that the Pope (head of the Catholic Church) is the successor of Saint Peter (the first Pope) and the representative of Christ on Earth. They believe in Heaven, which is the eternal union with God, Hell (eternal seperation from God) and Purgatory which is a temporary state where souls not ready for Heaven go for to purify themselves.

Eastern Orthodoxy

Eastern Orthodoxy is headed by the Orthodox Church and sees itself as the original form of Christianity, as founded by Jesus and his Apostles. It split off from Catholicism in 1054 otherwise referred to as the Great Schism after centuries of already growing tensions between Christians in the East and West but generally happened (there are more reasons) due to accusing eachother of heresy (act that is against original belief), the Pope claiming universal power over all churches whereas the East believed in shared leadership and Constantinople (a major Christian kingdom and de facto continuation of the Roman Empire) being isolated from the West.

Protestantism

Protestantism came to be during the Protestant Reformation of the 1500s and was headed by Martin Luther, a German monk who saw the Catholic Church as a corrupt entity wrongly representing Christianity. Where Catholic churches often adorn themselves in wealth and intricate design, Protestant churches are often way simpler and have nothing decorating the interior aside from a single cross hanging on the wall. This is mostly because Luther saw the Catholic excess as a symbol of corruption, the church wrongly taking the money of the populace to decorate itself. Though this is generalized, because again it varies from denomination to denomination.
