South America

Welcome!

South America is a continent defined by colonialism and indigenous culture and is one of the most culturally reaching continents of the bunch. Not only does it have a large Mestizo (those of indigenous + european ancestry) population but it is also home to the largest Japanese community living abroad (Brazil in particular but other South American countries also have a sizeable amount of Japanese people).

The Tupi of Brazil

The Tupi was a giant culture group on the coast of Brazil made up of multiple settlements, covering all of and more than the coast of modern Brazil. Because of this, the Portugese who first arrived on Brazil first came in contact with the natives forming part of the Tupi culture. They're believed to have originated from the Amazon, migrating east to the coast. One of the staples of Tupi culture is the importance of community over individuality. The Tupi also did body art, using the dye from fruit and seeds for primarily red and black. The art was used as protection against evil spirits, age or celebration just to name a few.

The Incas

The Incas primarily lived on the coasts and the surrounding area of what is now Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. Inca daily life was defined by herdership, most being either farmers or herders, owning herds of alpacas/llamas. Their clothes were made out of said animals' wool, and their houses of stone or mud with dried grass as a roof. The three defining Inca golden rules were to not steal, lie or be lazy. Those who followed through would be granted an eternal afterlife with the warmth of the sun. Those who defied these rules would spend their afterlife in the opposite, a cold and damp earth.
