Bem-vindo!

Brazil is the largest country of South America in terms of population (~211.1 million), nominal GDP (~$2.174 trillion) and total land area (8,358,140 km²). The vast majority of the country speaks Portuguese due to being colonized by Portugal (which is 92x smaller in total land area). It's also one of the only countries to have been an empire (along with Mexico and Haiti) before it transitioned into a republic.

Geography

The entire west of Brazil is largely covered by the Amazon rainforest (Brazil covers around 60% of the total Amazon rainforest and basin). To the east of the Amazon sits the Cerrado which is a giant tropical savannah. The east and northeast holds most of the coastline and is also the most arable area because of it.

Inhabitants

Before the Portuguese arrived the land of what is today the modern nation of Brazil was dominated by peoples who've lived in Brazil for thousands of years (Tupi, Guarani, Yanomami) though today only make up for around 1% of the total population with some 900,000 people of native descent existing today.

A large portion still live in tribes in the Amazon, places which are protected by the Brazilian constitution of 1988. (though illegal miners and loggers entering native territory and causing devasation for the locals is a common issue)

Mestiços

Post 1500s Portuguese (mostly male) colonizers arrived on Brazil and many paired with Indigenous and enslaved African women which is why around 45% of Brazil's population today is mixed race. Children of Indigenous + white parents are Caboclos and children of African + white parents are Mulatos.
